Speech/Language &
Learning Services
Elinor Kriegsmann
What is normal? Almost every parent asks that question when
wondering about their child's development. Is she growing at
a normal pace? Are her social skills comparable to other children?
Does she speak as well as she should?
The process of finding the answers often begins with your pediatrician,
however, if your questions concern communication, you want to
call Speech/Language & Learning Services.
"The wait and see approach is not recommended as much as
it was in the past because it is known early intervention can
make a big difference in a child's development, and later on,
in his school experience," says Elinor Kriegsmann, MA,
CCC, Speech/Language Pathologist and Associate Director of Speech
Language & Learning Services.
Kriegsmann says children as young as 18 to 24 months may exhibit
signs of future learning difficulties. Signals to watch for
include the following: a lack of interest in communication or
interaction, a tendency to get frustrated easily when trying
to talk, delayed language, restricted vocabulary, and difficulty
remembering directions, to name a few.
Speech Language & Learning Service's 27 certified speech/language
pathologists receive many calls from parents concerned about
these and other issues. They have offices in convenient locations
in the Puget Sound area, including Bellevue, Everett/Lynnwood,
Olympia, Seattle and Tacoma.
"We can reassure parents about normal behaviors, or help
sort out which concerns represent slower but normal development
and which are more unusual" adds SLLS Director Steve Thomas.
To prevent long-term problems, early intervention is important,
he stresses. "Your child may not have a problem, but now's
the time to find out and get help, if needed."
After an in-depth evaluation, some children start therapy and
others are given some helpful techniques to practice at home.
The child's progress is monitored and if he isn't catching up,
one-on-one therapy is begun.
Kriegsmann says it's exciting helping parents make a difference
in their children's lives.
