Good Night Room: Mary
Beth Draper and Amy Hanson
"My room was tremendously important to me as a child,"
says designer Amy Hanson. "My family moved quite often,
and to help ease the adjustment, my parents always made a production
out of decorating my new room. The excitement of choosing new
fabrics and wallpaper never failed to overcome the fear of a
new neighborhood.
Hanson and business partner, Mary Beth Draper, have now formed
their own firm in Seattle, Good Night Room, specializing in
custom designs for children's rooms and nurseries. "As
designers, we love the creativity and whimsy that can be brought
to children's rooms," says Mary Beth, "our clients
are parents who are looking for a classic, but fun design for
their child's room, usually at the same level of style as the
rest of their home. Often, they call us after seeing what is
currently on the market, and realizing that it is not as special
or as unique as they had hoped."
Good Night Room works with parents from ideas to design to implementation.
The designers focus on creating nurturing, safe places to accommodate
all of a child's changing interests and activities. They find
ways to incorporate space for reading, crafts, sleeping and
playing. If parents or children have a special need, Mary Beth
and Amy can explore various options to find a workable, fun
and attractive solution. One of the benefits of working with
a designer is the access to furniture, wallcoverings and fabrics
that are not available in retail stores. For example, Amy and
Mary Beth recently found a line of handmade quilts out of New
York, and wonderful cast iron cribs and children's beds from
Los Angeles, that compliment their favorite line of British
wallcoverings. The partners also work with local artists to
create custom wall finishes, furniture and floor coverings.
"We know a room is a success, when both the child and parents
can't wait to invite their friends over," says the team.
"No matter the scope or size of the project, we strive
for a combination of
style, convenience and cost effectiveness for our clients."
